Welcome to the Midwifery Collective of Essex County. Our midwives are committed to caring for families across Southern Ontario in the hospital and at home.
The best midwifery care is provided when women make informed decisions about their health care, involving their families and communities as they wish, and when they develop a comfortable relationship with their midwife. Responsibility for a healthy state of pregnancy rests both with the care provider and with the woman herself. Our midwives see their role as guides for you through your pregnancy and birth experiences.
The midwife is a skilled practitioner offering primary prenatal care, intrapartum care, and postpartum care to low-risk women and their newborns. She sees pregnancy and childbirth as a normal state for the healthy woman and believes that unnecessary intervention is an interruption of a healthy process. The midwife consults with and refers to specialists when necessary and will use emergency measures within the scope of her practice if the need arises.
In Ontario, midwifery services are government regulated and fully funded. A person may only practice as a midwife if they are registered with the College of Midwives of Ontario.
Midwifery services include longer appointments, 30-45 minutes in length, which allows time to answer all your questions. This also provides the opportunity to develop a strong trusting relationship with your midwife. With a midwife, you have complete medical support that puts you at the centre of care.
